What is Colorectal Cancer Screening Programme?

Often asymptomatic and unnoticeable, Colorectal cancer is the second commonest cancer in Hong Kong. Asymptomatic Hong Kong residents can receive screening service in private sector for prevention of colorectal cancer via this programme.

 

Participants will first take a Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) that can detect small amounts of blood in stool, even if they are invisible to the naked eye. If there is blood, colonoscopy will be arranged and to remove polyps, if any, to prevent them from developing into cancer.

 

Who is eligible to enroll this programme?

  • Aged between 50 and 75
  • Hold a Hong Kong Identity Card# or Certificate of Exemption
  • Registered in the Electronic Health Record Sharing System (Register eHealth)
  • Do not have symptoms of colorectal cancer, higher colorectal cancer risk, or screening/examination for colorectal cancer within a specified period (Please click here to learn more)


# Except those who obtained their Hong Kong Identity Card by virtue of a previous permission to land or remain in Hong Kong granted to them and such permission has expired or ceased to be valid

 

How to use the services of Quality Healthcare?

Quality HealthCare has over 60 general practitioners and 20 specialists registered as Primary Care Doctors and Colonoscopy Specialists to provide Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT), and colonoscopy examinations in around 32 medical centres, along with 4 day care centres. 

 

Potential programme participants will receive their first medical consultation with a Primary Care Doctors. The doctor will assess whether they are eligible for joining in the programme. Eligible participants will be issued FOBT tubes to collect stool specimens at home for bringing to designated specimen collection points, which will then be transported to laboratory for analysis. The doctor will notify the test result. The test is fully subsidised by the Government , and hence no co-payment fees will be charged.

 

If the FOBT result is positive, the participant will be referred to see an enrolled colonoscopy specialist to receive a colonoscopy examination subsidised by the Government. There is no additional charge for the examination under Quality Healthcare clinics. 

 

If the FOBT result is negative, the participant is advised to undergo the screening every two years.
